The Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method is a mathematical formulation designed to calculate the target score for the team batting second in a limited-overs cricket match interrupted by weather or other circumstances.
Cricket is a game of resources: Overs and Wickets. When a match is shortened, the team batting second has fewer overs but typically still has all 10 wickets. Simply reducing the target proportionally (Run Rate) is unfair because they can take more risks with wickets to score faster. DLS adjusts the target to keep the difficulty equal.
The method assigns a "resource percentage" to the overs and wickets remaining. If a team loses overs, they lose resources. The target is adjusted based on the resources available to both teams.
