Colombo, February 11, 2026 - Sri Lanka have suffered a major setback just days into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, with star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga ruled out for the remainder of the tournament due to a serious hamstring tear.
The 28-year-old leg-spinner picked up the injury during Sri Lanka’s opening Group A win over Ireland at the R. Premadasa Stadium. What initially appeared to be minor discomfort has since been confirmed as a significant tear, sidelining him for at least four weeks.
For the co-hosts, the timing could hardly be worse.
How the Injury Happened
Hasaranga was instrumental in the victory over Ireland on February 9, returning figures of 3 for 25 from his four overs to help defend a target of 164. He completed his spell despite feeling tightness in his left hamstring late in the innings.
An MRI scan conducted the following day revealed the severity of the damage. A UK-based specialist reviewed the results before Sri Lanka Cricket officially confirmed he would take no further part in the tournament.
Although officials stressed the injury is not a recurrence of previous problems, Hasaranga has battled several fitness setbacks in recent years, including foot issues and soft-tissue concerns.
A Significant Blow to Sri Lanka
There is no easy way to replace a player of Hasaranga’s impact.
He has been Sri Lanka’s leading T20 wicket-taker in global events, claiming 40 wickets in 20 T20 World Cup innings at an exceptional economy rate just over six runs per over. On spin-friendly subcontinental pitches, his control and variation are often decisive.
His batting offered balance too. With a strike rate above 140, he provided late-innings acceleration and tactical flexibility.
Sri Lanka now face Oman on February 12 in Pallekele, followed by a high-profile clash against Australia on February 16 and Zimbabwe on February 19. Under captain Dasun Shanaka, the team must quickly recalibrate without its primary match-winner.
Replacement Plans
Sri Lanka Cricket are expected to call up leg-spin all-rounder Dushan Hemantha as a like-for-like replacement. The move would maintain spin depth in the squad, which was carefully structured to suit home conditions.
Head coach Sanath Jayasuriya and the selection panel had emphasized balance when naming the preliminary squad. That planning is now being tested.
Hasaranga’s T20 World Cup Legacy
Since bursting onto the global stage in 2021, Hasaranga has built an impressive record in the format:
- 40 wickets in 20 World Cup matches
- Bowling average of 16.45
- Best figures of 5 for 3, including a memorable spell against England
Add over 500 runs across editions and his value becomes obvious. Few players influence games in as many ways.
Reaction and What Comes Next
News of his withdrawal spread quickly, with fans expressing disappointment across social media. Sri Lanka’s management have urged composure, describing the setback as a test of depth and resilience.
For Hasaranga, the focus now shifts to rehabilitation. A structured recovery program should see him return to competitive cricket later this year.
As for Sri Lanka, their campaign continues. The opening win over Ireland provides momentum, though the path through Group A just became more complicated.
Adversity is nothing new for this team. The question is whether someone else can step into the spotlight when it matters most.
